The modernization of the cooling system at Polcom described by Mateusz Borkowski

in the scientific journal Energies

The publication process of the second scientific article has been completed as part of Mateusz Borkowski’s professional doctorate, who serves as the Deputy Technical Director of the Data Center at Polcom. The publication titled “Energy Efficiency Increase Achieved by Dedicated Rule-Based Control of Chillers Operating in the Data Center” describes the modernization of the cooling system at Polcom, which has significantly improved its energy efficiency. Special emphasis was placed on the dedicated control system.

For many years, Mateusz Borkowski has been responsible for the continuous development of cooling systems in the Data Center facilities at Polcom. As part of his doctoral studies at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, together with his supervisor, Dr. Adam Piłat, he has developed a research article on the increase of energy efficiency at Polcom achieved through a dedicated rule-based control of the cooling units.

The goal of the doctoral thesis is to develop an energy-efficient and functionally reliable automated cooling system for our server rooms. It is a significant challenge, but I am very pleased that with the support from Polcom and the University, I will be able to undertake it.

Where did the idea for the modernization of the cooling system come from?

As Mateusz states, the market offers commercial, universal cooling solutions for Data Center environments that are designed to function properly under various operating conditions. However, the functional limitations resulting from their implementation served as motivation for Polcom to develop their own system architecture and dedicated control algorithm.

Our solution allows for individual control of each component of the cooling system. This has enabled an extension of the free cooling operation time by 2064 hours per year, a 69% increase in the coefficient of performance (COP) of the cooling system, and a reduction in electricity consumption by 206.9 MWh through extended free cooling operation.

Caring for the natural environment

In practice, the modernization of the cooling system at Polcom brings many benefits not only to the company but also has a positive impact on the environment, which is an extremely important aspect of our operations.

Since the beginning of our existence, we have been a company that cares about ecology and pays special attention to environmental responsibility. We firmly believe that, just like in the IT field, in the realm of ecology, the proper management of available resources and simple solutions are what truly matter – emphasizes Robert Czarniewski, Vice President of Polcom.
