An acceleration of digital transformation
What is driving it?
The significant acceleration of digital transformation over the past two years has come as a surprise to many companies. In my work, I often get questions from clients about what has caused such a large increase in interest on digitization and how to prepare for the changes. It made me think deeper about the answer and put it on paper. I invite you to read it.
Before I answer this question, I would like to explain what digital transformation actually is. It is the process of integrating digital technologies into a company’s business processes. Often, the implementation of new solutions involves major changes in existing methods of operation. So where does the tendency to accelerate the digital transformation process come from?
Reasons for accelerating digital transformation
One of the most important factors driving digital transformation is the necessity of adapting the dynamic changes in the business environment. In recent years, many companies have been forced to modify their operating model. In the beginning, the driver of these changes was the COVID-19 pandemic, but now the biggest impact is geopolitical instability Companies that want to adapt quickly to new challenges and maintain a competitive advantage must accelerate their digital transformation.
In addition, in recent years there have been dynamic changes in the behavior of customers, who are increasingly using available digital solutions to communicate with companies. Strong growth in popularity can be seen, for example, in the area of Customer Experience, where, among other things, automated contact center systems can significantly support sales or customer support departments. The e-commerce industry is also thriving, since a significant part of the population, especially Generation Z, chooses to shop exclusively online.
Companies real challenges
In an effort to keep up with the dynamics of market changes, companies choose to accelerate digital transformation in business using new technologies. One of the biggest challenges that businesses face is inadequate IT infrastructure. With ongoing shortages of servers, arrays and other IT infrastructure components, companies increasingly decide to move some of their processes to the cloud. Additional factor for using the cloud in the digital transformation process is the flexibility and adaptability to current needs. Today, it is difficult to predict how individual business processes will develop, and the purchase of equipment always involves the risk of underestimating or overestimating the investment.
Cybercriminals have accelerated the digitalization process
Years of working in IT, talking to clients about their needs and challenges led me to the conclusion that hacking attacks are also what is causing the acceleration of digital transformation. Sounds irrational? Well, let me explain. Over the past few months there has been a significant increase of cyberthreats that companies are facing. Maintaining proper level of cybersecurity necessary to secure data was often overwhelming for the IT departments. That is why companies decide to implement modern IT solution as a protection for cyberattacks. One of them is to outsource security management to specialized firms that provide a full range of security services. For example, Polcom’s SOC (Security Operation Center) support clients in protecting the cri tical assets and resources, and comprehensively supports businesses in continuity and recovery from any incident.
Inevitable direction for companies
The acceleration of digital transformation was quite unexpected, but it is an essential direction for almost every company, regardless of industry. Dynamically changing business requirements have only pushed the whole process forward. However, it is important to prepare for it properly, both in terms of organization and the necessary IT resources.
